The Library has three audience recordings.
The first is an excellent stereo recording, with which I can find no fault. The first of the source CD-Rs suffers from a brief (about twelve one hundredths of a second) gap between tracks eight and nine (Cocaine Blues and One Too Many Mornings) and the second CD-R suffers from a similar gap between tracks five and six (Like A Rolling Stone and Don't Think Twice, It's All Right). Both have been closed on all Library Masters. Clean, complete, crisp, and problem free. Thanks Robert! Dubbed 04/11/01. Request 9711121. 1 x 60 min. and 1 x 90 min.
The second is a fair, but rather harsh, recording. A bit rough at the outset, the beginning of Maggie's Farm is clipped. There's also a destructive tape flip near the end of Tangled Up In Blue. The volume level fluctuates a bit but settles down by the time Man In The Long Black Coat rolls around. The taper, Paul, explained: "I'm missing about ten seconds of the opening song Maggie's Farm. It started sooner than I expected and for some reason my tape stopped suddenly. I immediately restarted it but missed most of the announcer's intro and ten seconds or so of Maggie's. No great loss. I also missed a bit of TUIB (toward the end) when side A ended and I had to flip the tape. No lyrics lost, only instrumental. This is a fair tape, not great for sound quality."
Stuart Levitan wrote, in his post to rec.music.dylan (11/13/97), "After 23 years of Bobshows, had my ] first fatal encounter on taping w/security at Eagles Ballroom -- during Love Sick, no less. Sorry, Bobcats 'n' kittens, but the tape she is kaput." Consequently, I thought our taper's comments regarding security at the show might be of interest. Paul confided: "Security was not too bad. They did frisk everyone going in. I watched the four friskers for awhile to size them up as to which had the poorest frisking techniques before taking the plunge. Good thing too. I noticed they were now frisking at the small of people's backs, which was exactly where I had secreted my recorder. So I simply hiked it up a bit and went through undetected. The security people inside the hall didn't seem to be on the lookout for recorders so I wasn't very paranoid during the show. They made a big deal about cameras with verbal warnings to the crowd going in, that any found would be confiscated. But not a word about recorders. Though the tickets bore the legend "NO CAMERAS - NO RECORDERS"." Thanks, Paul! Dubbed 04/12/01. Request 9711122. 1 x 60 min. and 1 x 90 min.
The third is a pretty good, but incomplete, stereo recording. The end of Blind Willie McTell is clipped and Highway 61 Revisited and Like A Rolling Stone are missing. A rough edit falls between Don't Think Twice, It's All Right and Love Sick resulting in the clipping of the first second or two of the latter. Thanks Spencer! Dubbed 04/13/01. 90 min.
